Aye, Matey! I’m in!

Maria Rodale's avatar

Whooo hoo!

Yes, put women & younger people in charge for awhile. Old white male boomers have fucked things up long enough; the alternatives can't possibly be worse (not counting Noem, Bondi, Leavitt & a few others).

Maria Rodale's avatar

Okay we will let you live. 😂

Just kidding!

Tim Grover's avatar

Just kidding you'll let me live? Do I need to hire security??? 😳😵‍💫🥴🫨🤔

Maria Rodale's avatar

Don’t worry. Lady pirates are non violent. Mostly. You are safe with me at least.

Tim Grover's avatar

ARRR righty then!

Sign me up as a lady pirate!!

[Also...Woods Hole, be still my beating heart. I did all my graduate research there.]

Maria Rodale's avatar

It’s the best! My daughter works for WHOI!

Lindsay Green's avatar

Thats impressive! What does she do there? By the way the current running through Woods Hole is ferocious. Sailing challenging ! Can I pist a photo here? I have one for you.

Maria Rodale's avatar

She actually works in the currents department. And her partner has a beautiful sailboat. They’ve taken me out a few times and I love it.

Dr. Wendy Pabich's avatar

No way?!? That’s fabulous! I was at MIT but housed at MBL rather than WHOI. I love that community.

Maria Rodale's avatar

What was your graduate research on? It's one of the best communities I've ever witnessed.

I was studying biogeochemistry and my research was on denitrification of anthropogenically-derived nitrate (wastewater, fertilizer, atmospheric deposition) in groundwater and the factors that control it. I focused on the topic because nitrate loading is one of the top threats to coastal zones around the world.

And, yes, an amazing place—scientists, artists, kooky bike-riding characters with cats on shoulders.

Lindsay Green's avatar

Not sure when you studied there and did all your nitrate research. It certainly is very relevant in 2026.

Dr. Wendy Pabich's avatar

It was decades ago but I've done lots of related work over the years. And, yes, it's a huge problem.

yay yay yay. First, yes, you were brilliant to sell your business exactly when you did. and I’ve been inspired lately by a (male) writer and performer of solo shows who got rejected by every conventional theater so started performing in people’s houses, including his own. I love Bezos et al in their shades in the big black speedboat

As a former sailor on that Viking ship, it was the best choice to sell. And your father trusted you. I think I told you that the vision of your father is now clear and growing via The Rodale Institute. Thank you for leading that.

And yes, I think women in their 50’s should be taking the helm in Congress, business and culture. The guys over 70 need to step down, play golf, whatever.

Maria Rodale's avatar

Thank you! ☺️ ❤️ I was just thinking that all those guys would be free to golf and fish as much as they wanted to.

"It’s time to start building new models that we own and control..." As a sailor and a man, I fully agree. We're all being played by a few at the top. Thanks for calling it out for the corruption and disservice that it is, and the better paths for all of us.

Maria Rodale's avatar

Ooh! Exciting that you are a sailor! Welcome to the pirates!

M Fritz's avatar

I’m all for chucking everything and becoming a lady pirate! Aarrgghh!

Donna J Brown's avatar

I would love to be a lady Pirate with a sword. Every year in Yorktown VA they have a pirate weekend with a program on how to become a pirate. Unfortunately it was for kids and I was way too old.

Maria Rodale's avatar

Never too old! 😊

Goosebumps!! I love the idea of lady pirates!!

Wild Lion*esses Pride by Jay's avatar

Yes, Mam! This sounds like a wonderful plan. I'm in if non-binary people are accepted.

Maria Rodale's avatar

Absolutely! ❤️ anyone is welcome as long as they are committed to doing the right thing to build a new world! I think we are all a little non binary anyway.

Yes. This. I like LPs (+ the long playing aspect) But...how does that work/ what does that look like? During the pandemic I found myself having to resign from a board that I had long been a part of. I wept writing the letter & cried to my bizcoach that it esp. hurt bc I support female leadership. They said, just bc someone occupies a female body doesn't mean they are operating from a feminine power (men can operate from it too). A few years later one of the women came up to me at an event, grabbed my shoulders & said 'you were right all along', but only bc the same treachery she had participated in had now been turned on her. I think the Congresswomen who helped end the shutdown back in 2013 are an example of what this might look like. But how to meet this moment? This post is a great start. 💗💪

It’s going to be unique for each one of us. But thinking like a pirate is a good start.

agree, with one addition. bullies come for their targets. so, while women are given to the business of creating our own spaces, building a different system, there has to be a plan to either dismantle or defend against would-be interference.

Maria Rodale's avatar

That’s why we are pirates!

I’ve commissioned my daughter to make a flag but you can make one too!

Great analogy!

A good friend of mine that I went to high school with has a sail boat. I never would have imagined her sailing a boat when 45 years ago. In fact, she's the president of the Philadelphia Sailing Club. When she goes to a coastal town on business, she doesn't stay in hotels...there are actually boats you can rent to stay in overnight, like hotels. This all amazes me since I have a fear of water...first thing I so when I get on a boat is scope out where the life jackets are. Would it be okay if I ran the lighthouse instead? ;-)
