Great post! I read that because of everything you've outlined, conventional eggs now cost the same as organic. XO from the daughter without the Neosporin :-)

I'm thinking about the soup option because yesterday one of them bit me!

A friend who grew up on a farm keeps chickens here in the city, she also has a huge garden and between it all her household is zero waste. I’ve been the lucky recipient of her eggs and they are beautiful shades of blue.

Dad was proud of his chickens and rooster at his home in central Oregon. His day started with mixing a big tub of oatmeal for his hens, later picking up the egg bounty for the kitchen and selling eggs to neighbors. Fresh eggs and a steady business. Mom and Dad would sell 2 or 3 dozen a day at three bucks a dozen and claim to have made six or nine dollars. A good share of every day was tending to the needs of his chicks. Mom and Dad participated in the local chicken coup tour and would show off the operation and raffle a "chicken tractor" every year that he built. All was good even though there were some catastrophes along the way with local dogs and other predators. Mom and Dad never calculated the cost, I would argue "those eggs aren't free". When they sold their place a couple of years ago they sold the chickens right along with the greenhouses and garden. The main thing about chickens and eggs is that they are like a garden, you can graze your own locale to find the foods to sustain a good life.

Reading this has sure saved me a lot of suffering, because the day I rub Neosporin on a chicken butthole is a day I hope I never see!

Oh my goodness yes to this. Last winter (here is Australia) I house sat for friends and their chickens. At the time I think they had about 15 of them in this state of the art coup with an automatic door!! They have so many more now. I absolutely fell in love with them AND wow the work it takes. We should most def be grateful and opt for those more expensive eggs where we can 🐥

Thanks Maria! Being in the food service industry since 1980, including The Ann&R soup bowl early on. I have always tried to keep on the conscious side of respect for our animal and plant relationships. Your voice is welcome, needed and honored!
