Have you read "The Fourth Turning"? It was recommended by a friend and has been on my end table waiting for me to read it.

From Wikipedia: According to the theory, historical events are associated with recurring generational personas (archetypes). Each generational persona unleashes a new era (called a turning) lasting around 21 years, in which a new social, political, and economic climate (mood) exists. They are part of a larger cyclical "saeculum" (a long human life, which usually spans around 85 years, although some saecula have lasted longer). The theory states that a crisis recurs in American history after every saeculum, which is followed by a recovery (high). During this recovery, institutions and communitarian values are strong. Ultimately, succeeding generational archetypes attack and weaken institutions in the name of autonomy and individualism, which eventually creates a tumultuous political environment that ripens conditions for another crisis.

So glad you are delving into history these days. I think we should have adult history classes. And your thoughts on young men are spot on!

I started 3 new teen interns on the farm last week - cute kids - 16 years old and completely clueless and totally deer in the headlights. Our kids no longer have basic skills - they can barely write vegetable names on labels. But if they stick it out for the summer, they will be empowered for their next steps. 😊

I love history, and see soooo many echoes of the past in what is happening now.

I also now love Melani Saunders and the WDNC club. She is speaking my truth.

I don’t know what’s going on with Substack, but I wrote a comment already and I don’t know where it went! Into the ethers, I guess.

Anyway, I want to thank you for this post. I’m not only going to re-stack it, I’m also going to forward it to people I care about who aren’t on Substack.

Your words are so important.

Thank you! We must learn from the past or be doomed to repeat the huge errors we’ve inflicted on the land and on each other.
