To me, it seems that humanity goes through cycles of mechanical and spiritual growth. We cleverly create gadgets, and blindly pursue the wealth they potentially create; then, we have spiritual growth dealing with the wreckage that the cleverness created. Spiritual growth seems to lag mechanical growth when the former should be a condition of the latter. But there I go again “shoulding” on society.
HHS Secretary Kennedy cutting funding for research: that's true, but not a statement of truth which is universities and medical school science is all about treating symptoms and never the causes. The use of any petrochemical-derived agricultural/pharmaceutical product negatively impacts the Earth's/your microbiome's ability to keep plants/you healthy.
Whatever you believe, you become. Your thoughts control your biology, yes, but the real work is getting rid of your grandparents epigenetic beliefs so that you stop repeating them. It's extremely challenging work but highly rewarding. Do whatever works for you but shield yourself from the paid-for opinions from Misery, Inc.; don't give up your power.
Here's a medical experiment regarding the power of belief.
There are many other experiments showing the power of belief. I highly encourage you to experiment on yourself! If you need context, read chapters 4 and 5 in the Biology of Belief.
I like your honesty Maria and your forthrightness in writing on it. I trust your writing. I have been writing about the dangers of untethered AI creeping relentlessly into our lives. With all it's possibilities it also has been grabbed by some unscrupulous characters for extreme profit and greedy manipulation. That overreach and imbalance is becoming greatly harmful already in some spheres, especially in economic, political, and even cultural ones, now becoming in influence deeply personal in our lives as well. 10 years ago I wrote a near term sci-fi novella about this anticipated effect upon our local communities, us, and our society. I self-published this not for profit or a big readership, but rather so I could examine the possible effects of AI as it was and is quickly evolving in power and use. Unfortunately, so far my fictional setting and analyses are coming true. That alarms me, and so I find I am writing about the downsides and risks of untethered, largely unregulated AI ventures for profit and (often) greedy gain more and more. Thank you too for calling these risks and consequences out! It must be said and acted upon. Like you, I am not against technology, only perverse uses of it.
Thanks Richard! We have to be careful about creating fictional scenarios about the future because they often manifest. What would a fictional positive future look like? Write that book!
I do think the novella's narrative has a positive ending (spoiler alert) and manifests as such. The novella is based around AI without ever mentioning AI as such. Nor social media, nor cell phones. That was not easy to do, but I believe I accomplished that. The characters and their friendships and their connections within the local community are key. Beyond friendships even, their ingenuity, their core beliefs, and their individual talents that they fit together solve the dilemma that they have been placed in by the dominant culture/authorities that have applied (AI) type powers to their lives (much as we are already seeing happen). The closest I came to actually mentioning AI is a technology monitoring "snowflake" on the September breeze (spoiler alert) that is noticed, but only as an odd snowflake, not comprehending what it actually is...
Yes. I recently wrote a piece and tested ChatGPT against it to see if it would "improve" it. It kinda' did - it became an advertising or marketing piece. Which isn't what my aim was - authenticity and real experience live!
AI is just the latest version of stealing from the commons.

Heh heh - Mugwort making an appearance to remind you of what ELSE is real.
Couldn't agree more.

I will continue to do the same.
