As 2023 comes to a close, let me just say it kinda sucked. My stroke, my aborted book promotions, multiple deaths - including my sister, major betrayals that shall not be named, witnessing horrific genocides and feeling helpless about what to do, and watching the bizarre loyalty so many people seem to have to a serial criminal former President who also shall not be named made the whole year a bit of a hot mess.
I saw that Werner Herzog said to Piers Morgan that 30 minutes of the Barbie movie was analogous to "sheer Hell" and he encourages those who want a preview of Hell to watch the movie. I haven't seen it yet! Maybe they are just being grumpy old men? I have a lot of Maria musing to catch up on! I am very sorry that you were betrayed by someone close to you. I just assume that is how it will end at this point.
Maria I love your substack. Your writing and perspective always resonate with me, and this one particularly so. My year, too, was filled with difficulty intermixed with joys such as time with my new grandson. Thank you for putting it all into words and sharing.
Was thinking of you and the family this week, as I received dispatches from the memorial service. Families are complicated, as are businesses. But family businesses! Oh my. Hope you were able to find solace and hear some good stories at the gathering. The stories are what keep people alive in our hearts and minds.
WOW really wonderful to hear your voice. So very sorry for the sorrow this year has brought. You are right there are positives to be seen in every loss - how smart you are. Your family has always been your strength and will continue to be the light in your day. This is a wonderful read - keep us up to date on your thoughts You and they are precious.
As if the goal of life is to feel good. And the way to get there is by consuming stuff, like Jabba the Hut. No wonder you always sound like a bitter old biddy. There aren't enough gluten-free pancakes on the planet to fill your emptiness. Wake up or shut up, please.
I love all of this, and wish you good health, joy, peace. And dinner together in 2024.

A new realm of thinking for me.
